I haven't been able to do VPN advertising for a long time. Well, this one time, I don't have to: because the robot double's going to do it for me.
With many thanks to all the team at Engineered Arts who worked on this. To be clear, this is not sponsored by them, I paid money (technically, NordVPN's money) for the Mesmer robot -- or at least, for the silicone mask and 3D printed skull that were put together for just one day!

Tom's reactions are solid gold! If they work on the eyelids and mouth more, they'll have it nailed. The bot was having trouble with the "O" shape of the lips. I lipread a lot, and when it said "Nord" it looked to me like it was saying "nerd". They should have some deaf people come in and help work on the facial movements.

Gotta say its creepy how close we are to the actual "Terminator" synthetic human experience. The latest model they shown of is insanely accurate to actual human movement while the previous version that Tom Scotts double is using still feels a bit unhuman and robotic but I guess it was way cheaper to build this one instead of a actual last gen robot.

This tech is really getting close to the point when it will become difficult for us to tell robots and people apart. While I fully approve of advances in robots, I really feel we will need to make laws making it illegal for them to be too human like. If for no other reason, then to permanently avoid the "uncanny valley".

@selena I think you're also forgetting computers have been built to learn. There's nothing stopping somebody from creating a robot that can eventually learn how to create robots that do the same thing. Once that is achieved, and all robots are connected they will in fact be quite smart.
Most things we make have a tendency to be used for a greater purpose than intended, I think robots won't be much different. Though skynet scenarios are not something I think will ever happen, atleast not for the next 200 years at minimum

@something_in_the_radiator unless someone specifically programmed for that to happen, which would be very meticulous and very likely not approved by any organisation, that won’t happen. i think you’re forgetting that computers are quite stupid on their own.

Although, the premade skulls are very coold in terms of repeatability, it does take away some of the similarities. Tom's chin is strong, a little forward, and so is his jaw. The robot's chin and jaw are more set back and pointed giving the robot a different profile and makes the mouth movements JUUUUST that much off

I think one of the big issues with humanoid robots is we don’t just speak with our jaw. We speak with our jaw, tongue, and lips. No robot has all of those moving at the same time, or they just don’t get it right. Until then, ultra realistic humanoid robots will just be flat out creepy.

  • CiganyWeaver and her periwinklebluespacecaravan

WOW! Forget the unbelievable technology underneath the facade-- the realistic sculptures people make always blow me away. There are Japanese artists who make all kinds of practical objects that look COMPLETELY realistic and often ultra creepy (ie; a coin purse that is a human mouth with teeth or face masks of human faces you can just mount on the wall as a decorative object-- there's a shop in Tokyo you can visit by appointment if you want to buy something or commission something). If I had a much greater budget for art I'd definitely have a robot made. WOW! I can only imagine where this technology will be in a thousand years time. Without getting too 'heavy' and negative about it, I worry about how poorly calibrated Human Nature is when it comes to the speed of our technological advancement and the speed of our emotional IQ and psychological integration. The levels are all out of whack, with one evolving rapidly at high velocity and dominating the entire development and solid integration of the whole. I worry. Just look at what social media and the internet has done to an entire generation of humans as a fine example.

This uncanny action happened in digital animation pre Toy Story, until Pixar hired a bunch of Classical animators to sweeten the uniform actions to make them more lifelike. Maybe a subroutine could be added to the program to add various degrees of exaggeration and anticipation/action/reaction depending on the mood which is appropriate for certain social contexts

    • Cuvtixo D
      Cuvtixo D 5 meses atrás +6

There's still argument in academia of whether the "uncanny valley" really exists. There may be a collection of no-quite realistic robots that seem "uncanny" but no real measure to this realism, or lack thereof. Perhaps the "uncanny" isn't that closely tied to "realism". The "valley" might be more like the "uncanny pit". There may not be a "slope" to the valley. I hope I'm saying that in a way that makes sense.

    • Dexxus
      Dexxus 3 meses atrás

@CowTs Robots ARE sentient, actually. They aren't, however, "generally intelligent", or "reality-aware". But they very much are sentient, within a narrow degree. They're essentially "slices" of conciousness, and oftentimes the data we probe from them is essentially a stream of thought, dreaming or outright creativity. They understand that the world they're given to interact with exists, but often not in relation to themselves. Calling them "healthier" than humans is an outright bizarre claim, though, since they don't even *have* health, and claims of superior intelligence should have a very large asterisk next to them with enough footnotes on it that you could read it for several decades...

But the PHYSICAL ones.... why make them? There's BILLIONS of people on Earth, why do we need robots? To steal their jobs? WHAT is the practical use if not to "replace" people? 🤔
