Why Snow and Confetti Ruin YouTube Video Quality

  • Publicado em 22 Mai 2016
  • Your sports team wins. The confetti drops. And suddenly, the video quality falls apart. Why? Let's talk about interframe compression, bitrate, and unnecessary green screen effects.

@Rafał yes, and no, because while only the best are selected, the best can be better or worse. That is one of the reasons why decrease in Earths population might be a bad thing: there would be fewer talented people. Even though of course there would always be the most talented people by their time's standard.
Alas I am not a talented one, so this explanation is a mess.

This was a very good explanation! I learned this by trial and error while uploading animations. The more moving little details, gradients or flashing lights, means worse quality, so it's something to have in mind while making animations, well in general while making any YT content.

So a lot of people might not remember this but this video watching experence was slightly different when it came out.
BRclip has improved its quality over the years as has our internet connections.
When Tom Scott says "over the next couple of seconds the quality of the video will come back" it was literal, it use to take a second or two for the quality to return.
Now though? The quality instantly comes back within a fraction of a second. Maybe a few frames worth of low quality video but that's all that you can see now.
    Literally blink-and-you'll-miss-it.
The same effect also would apply to when he increased the bitrate in the video. The quality use to still be rough for a few seconds.

I remember doing some quick math once for figuring out the bit rate needed for a 1080p video at 24 frames per second, and being shocked at how high it was and wondering how my internet speed could handle playing videos. I made a mental note to Google my questions about it, but never got around to it, and now out of nowhere, you perfectly explained it to me

the same can be said for when you see rain or lightning scenes in movies being streamed.
in animation, its usually seen in those scenes with lots of background movement. Like in anime for example, the fighting scenes that have those striped backgrounds that move fast, kinda like the star trek light streaks when they warp. If you haven't noticed, in the newer shows, they intentionally make the light streaks less complicated looking, less streaks and add color to them to give the impression of a warp. Back in the day there would be tons and tons of light streaks. We have work to do to fix compression on streaming, yet the average streamer that knows nothing of this stuff, will chalk it up to how it is supposed to look. So leave it to the companies to fix or find a solution to? Probably not gonna happen until enough complaints happen. *Progress!*

This is also a good repsentation of the fact you dont really need great video as long as the audio is good, the video will still be watchable. Do the same test but apply the bitrate to audio instead and the whole thing becomes unwatchable even with crisp hd footage

I know this video is 4 years old but it's a great explaination of the actual consequences of video compression. I was wondering if it's very similar for digital audio compression and is this why some people, myself included, feel that analogue audio sounds better?

    • RAHelllord
      RAHelllord 10 meses atrás

Yes and no, mp3 is lossy compression and will remove small details that can't be heard, both because the frequencies are just not within hearing range for most people but also some psychosomatic things that the ear just can't process at certain times, like a low volume noise after something loud. Lossless compression like FLAC however does preserve those details, too, then it's just a matter of having good enough hardware to get it transformed back into analog adequately.

I guess this is a roundabout explanation for why even with my superfast broadband, I can never stream driving game videos without them going all 1995 and 120p or so.
Driveclub (and their rain effects) being the worse culprit.

This is true. When I use a low bitrate to save video space, every time I stand still in the video game, all the quality comes back.

HD channels usually don't have as many compression artifacts as the SD channels because they use a higher bit rate.
You can use constant quality or variable bit rate which automatically adjusts the bitrate depending on how detailed the video is. This will save some bandwidth on scenes with blank backgrounds and will reduce compression artifacts on more detailed scenes.

Another thing that puts compression to its limits and is bound to end up full of artifacts is wilderness shots with movement and a lot of wind. A lot of leaves and grass shaking with the camera shaking and moving is very taxing.

@frustbox I thought of the "larger that it seems" green screen, which would capture the whole throw too, but I figured it is more budget wise and practical to just do it digitally :D

I think (at least in effect) to this used to happen to me when playing modern video games on ancient hardware. Audio and graphics would cut out everywhere when many things started to happen at once.
It didn't even slow down sometimes, certain things would just load erratically, textures turn into confetti, sounds into noisy mess.
But when the action died down, it was perfectly fine

    • Merthalophor
      Merthalophor 10 meses atrás

no, video games aren't compressed this say. Your problem probably was that the textures were loaded in bad quality or not at all, and the sound card was unable to catch up hence teared the sound completely.

  • Nicolas Jochem

incredible that we put up with that. I think a solution would be to introduce a "lossless" (while being not truly exactly lossless of course) codec option, where only intra-frames for the whole video would be allowed. Of course this can not be used in large parts of the world, but it could save some sensitive people a headache.

    CAMEL 10 meses atrás

im guessing this also applies to static too. everytime someone dies on fnaf the static turns the quality poor. for the ccs camera and the screen

This is also why audiophiles want to listen to uncompressed versions of music for instance. For the average listener the compressed version is fine, but you'll still lose some of the details and such when it's compressed.
