Can you really drive while facing backwards?

  • The team at Sparkmate ( Spkm.co/Build ) asked if I had any ideas for things to build. And I realised that, yes, I had a question to answer: and it all goes back to an old kids' television show called "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons"...
    This isn't an advert for Sparkmate. I've not been paid, and they had no control over the edit, the story, or whether it was published at all. However, they've obviously given a large amount of time, money and effort to put this together, and hopefully that's clear from the video!

      When driving forward you place your hands on the top of the wheel. When driving backways you place your hands on the bottom of the wheel. Steering input becomes much more instinctive.

      It's build wrong. You should be able just to see the screen, and not seeing the surrounding around you. Should be like "back of the van"

    I wonder if the disorienting effect would be smaller if you were completely enclosed like the show's vehicle.

      I don't think so, I think most of the disorientation comes from the feeling of the G forces going the wrong way.

    I think the biggest difference between this model and the one in the show: you could see the outside in this model, while in the SPV there was only a tiiiiny window showing the outside world. That of course minimizes the cognitive dissonance dramatically in my opinion.

      @Chrismofer Something I learned doing VR development: the human body is quite good at telling when it's under acceleration and when acceleration changes, but not what direction it's happening in. It can be easily fooled to perceive entirely wrong acceleration vectors as long as some kind of acceleration is actually happening, based on visual cues.
      There was a VR rollercoaster project (I wasn't directly involved, but I knew some folks) that never ended up going public. It abused this fact continuously, to create the impression of motion that didn't match that of the rollercoaster itself at all.

      I was going to say that, if they could have installed blackout curtains and leave just the screen as the only medium with the outside world, he would have no problem at all

      @Esben Gaarsmand Best moment to see the steering is at 8:12. He pulls the wheel to the left for him, and the car turns to the left, so the steering does match what is shown on the screen.

      I think the biggest issue the controls are in reverse for some reason... The steering should match the screen so when you turn left while facing screen the vehicle turn left in real life.

    I love the fact that they made up a "fun" reason for using a controller instead of a steering wheel, when they probably just didn't have the space to put it in safely

      I think it was just a disconnect in intent. In their scrapped ideas they also shown their concept of a drone acting as a third person view, lke GTA. Their intent was to mimic video game driving while Tom wanted it to simply be driving a car while backwards.

      I doubt it. If you are driving via monitor then you want the experience to be as familiar as possible. Gamers have been driving via monitor for years using those types of controllers and it probably is easier for them to adapt to the mindset of 'go off the monitor' using the controller than it would be to use a standard wheel/pedal setup. Same reason why military drone programs use game controllers now.

    Hi Tom, I've been following for a while and really enjoy videos but this one is a favourite. I'm 62, born and raised in the UK and living in the US. When I was younger than 10 I would be glued to Captain Scarlet when each new episode came out! I had a die-cast model of the exact vehicle you were talking about and, if I close my eyes and concentrate, yes the seats pointed backwards! As a child it never occurred to me that this was a problem. I also remember going to a school Christmas party dressed as Captain Scarlet with one of those "gendarme style" hats made from crepe paper and cardboard. Thanks for a bundle of laughs and a heap of nostalgia.

      It was actually Gerry Anderson's idea, the theory being that accidents would be less dangerous if you were facing that way.

      Why didn't you invert left and right both on the screen and the steering wheel? That would have made the acceleration felt by the driver line up with screen and controls.

      Now. . . put a glass tank on it, fill it with water, set up it up to be controlled from inside and put a (consenting) dolphin in it.
      Voilà. The dolphin can now travel around and check out how things are going above the water 😁😁

    Fun fact, this is part of the reason why instrument flight (flying through clouds, etc., where you have no visual reference) requires a separate rating. The feeling of what's going on outside you can very easily throw off what you think is happening and lead you to put in very wrong inputs, which in a plane, can be a fatal mistake. Instrument rated pilots need to learn how to ignore those extra inputs your body is used to seeing and fly solely by instrument.
    The University of Illinois did a study testing flight into clouds with otherwise-qualified but not instrument rated pilots and asked them to do a 180 degree turn after entering the cloud (to get back out). On average, they lost control in 178 seconds.

    This reminds me a lot of the "reverse handlebar bike" which is rigged to steer the opposite direction from the turn. It's amazing how quickly a brain can adjust to "different" input-output modes with a little bit of practice. Like you, the biggest issue I have with driving games is the lack of peripheral vision.

      When I was a kid I tried a few times to ride my bike with my arms crossed and hands on opposite sides of the handlebars. It never ended well.

      Yes - or the classic 'upside down' glasses which show the world as our eyes really see it, only for the brain to reverse it so it feels 'normal'.

      Modern car design in a nutshell, really. Surround the driver with more and more solid metal that makes it very easy to walk away from a crash but increasingly hard to see out, so they're going to get in more accidents. If _other_ people get hurt or killed in those accidents, well, that's their fault for not shelling out for the latest car every few years innit? /s

    For an extremely lo-fi version of this sort of effect, try walking whilst holding a full length mirror in front of you at arm's length. It's my favourite bit of moving house.

    Might have been easier if you were in a visually sealed container -- the clues from your peripheral vision wouldn't have contradicted with what you saw on the screen. I love how you always come up with great ideas for videos! Another winner!

      @PewPewDragon when I started driving cars again after 5 years of motorbike only, I had to relearn the feeling of you lean the opposite direction being normal, so if you did this same experiment with a motorbike rider, and made it a more sealed experience to remove contradictory visual stimuli it would probably work really well

      @PewPewDragon I like your analogy, maybe it would feel more like "counter steering" on a bike where you apply a gentle force to the bars opposite to the direction you want to turn, and the bike just leans itself over.

    So as for the bonus question: What if you were to invert the right/left control inputs, would that mean the learning curve is gone, or would your physical/feeling-based feedback still confuse you?

      I think the most intuitive control would be mirrored, like driving in reverse with a rear view mirror.

    When I watched the show on the B&W TV, I could make out the strings.
    I also remember the die cast model I had, with it's 9 axles : 5 outer wheels and 4 inner wheels plus the tracks on the back. It was, by far, the heaviest, and biggest, die cast model that I ever had.

    So, would limiting what you see outside, just like the SPV, would it be easier for you to drive? At 2:38, in the show they had a very small window, I'm guessing the less you see of the world outside makes it easier to drive "backwards".

    The human brain is quite adaptable, so with enough training someone could probably be really effective driving like this, and do whatever crazy maneuvers the action scenes require. The hard part might be their commute home from work in their ordinary forward driving car.

That is the world of difference from doing it remotely. Remotely you do not have the sense of motion. You really have no clue what you are talking about.

    "If I crashed I woulda been safer" Now we have to combine the probabilities of crashing driving the normal way along with the probabilities of serious injury, and compare them to the combined probabilities of getting seriously injured driving backwards and the probability of crashing because we are driving backwards. Another interesting experiment, may I add.

    I drive my car in reverse, watching the rear-view camera screen, all the time. It's easy. I don't go very far that way because the camera is wide-angle and doesn't accurately reflect the distance of things, but I never have any trouble turning in the right direction because the video is mirrored.

    This reminds me of the video about the reversed-steering bicycle. There isn;t anything 'natural' about raising your left hand, and lowering right hand to go right, it's just training, and muscle memory.
    I would suggest anybody trying this, practive a bit with a racing game wheel and such to 'reset' brain to normal steerting before driving on the roads ;)

      @Those Weirdos the show used monitors.
      and you can't just put a screen and a camera and call it done, you need to optimize the system to make it usable, that's what software engineers are for, otherwise you're gonna have a plethora of problems while driving, mainly latency.

    2:10 I've suddenly had an intense flashback of playing with that exact toy when I was a toddler. Jesus I haven't thought about that thing in decades. Had some thunderbirds toys as well.

    I kind of want to see a lower speed version of this on a gameshow obstacle course. Would be cool to watch how a random selection of people handle it. Technically speaking a lot of us already drive backwards while looking forwards with reversing cameras in cars but mostly at low speed and only for a few moments.

    Interestingly enough I wonder if just simply flipping the horizontal would fix the cognitive dissonance caused by right vs left, the perception of moving forward and backward would still be awkward but the turning would feel correct, relatively speaking

    I think a truer test would involve having no exterior sightlines at all. So a completely enclosed cockpit of sorts. As it is, your peripheral vision is making you think you're driving a car in reverse, so if you're at all used to driving, I imagine you'll more easily fall back into the pattern of turning left for right and vice versa.

      Agreed. The game controller was also a random choice which could only screw the nature of the entire exercise and I'm glad Tom politely put his foot down, so to speak, and demanded the steering wheel. These guys are brilliant at building stuff but terrible at running experiments.

      Good point. Could the effect of a completely enclosed cockpit be emulated by blindfolding the driver? That way he can't see any exterior sightlines

    We all have those high latency days... Really interesting video, wonder if a periscopic mirror type system could be designed, obviously one of those doo hickeys with mirrors mirroring mirrors so the end result is the right way up.
    Going way off note, this makes me really appreciate phones of this day, the latency from the camera moving to the image being displayed on screen is really low in comparison to a lot of other camera systems. (I do think they slightly over thought their system though, but really good for a proof of concept).

    Awesome concept! I feel like it might have been less disorienting if you had blinders on so you can focus on the screen. Akin to a horse on a race track.

    Interesting experiment. Reminds of a video where some guy learnt to ride one of those bicycles where the steering is reversed (turn left to go right, etc). I think it took him a couple of months but something eventually clicked and he could do it. Once proficient it then took him 20 minutes to learn how to ride a normal bike again and I suspect this is no different.
    The brain doesn't know how to drive a car but we are all taught conventionally and that's what the brain learns and it's a case of un-picking those pathways and re-programming them, even with the external stimulus. Might be quicker without seeing outside but ultimately your brain will learn to ignore it?

    It’s funny how in making this the latency was one of the biggest challenges, as in the time of the show with analog cameras and monitors this would’ve been a total non-issue

      @FalconFetus8 when evaluating latency the input latency is actually the only thing that matters. When trying to improve the input latency, every delay state needs to be known.
      Though there are kind of two runs of output from the input here, the action of the vehicle and the display.
      It would be interesting to know if they had any issues with camera to display latency since it's not a completely independent system. The updates on the display does not rely on the input directly but it is showing the results after they have taken place. Unlike videogames where the display is the only output

      @Amoeba Spoken like someone who thinks they know a little bit of information, but have never actually worked on a project like this.
      Getting the information to driver and interrupting the inputs of the driver had to be a big challenge. If a game lags once every hour for 0.5 seconds the user forgets about it very quickly. If a car lags once every hour for 0.5 seconds people die. There is an infinitely higher standard of reliability required than gaming systems.
      Due to the physical limitations of having to project the information from a camera to a screen before the human eye ever sees it there is a minimum amount of latency that is a guarantee. They would have needed to create a system that doesn't add any extra latency and is robust enough to never fail.

    I can only imagine what it must be like to drive when your vestibular system is disagreeing with your visual system. I'd imagine you can learn to recalibrate, but much of driving is also engrained in muscle memory, so it could be a bit dangerous.

    The brain can adapt to living using glasses that invert the world, so I think this is just a matter of getting used to it! Initially it sounded insane, but only because we've learned to drive facing forwards.

    I think the moment you use a steering wheel for it you start treating it like a car going in reverse and the monitor is a mirror, or back up camera, so subconsciously you reversed the controls again as if going in reverse with a car

      @SeanBZA You're misinformed. The Onewheel uses standard go-kart tires. Comes with a Vega slick as standard, most experienced riders soon switch it out for a threaded Hoosier. Any mechanic shop can make the swap if you're not comfortable taking a crowbar to it yourself. You can also order aftermarket pressure pads, bearings and wear parts, and the tools to replace them. You're only really screwed if the electronics fail. As is the case with most products.

    Would be interesting to have a wide angle POV camera recording behind the driver so you could see what the diver is seeing/doing along with the actual scenery moving around the car... Probably be really freaky.

    Seems like the best approach would be to mirror the video output left to right. Then it would be like driving in reverse, which most drivers have a lot of experience with.

    Thinking how confusing it would be for me, I am used to control FPV drones, so that thing, I see different movement than my body does, is not that weird for me, and I guess if I use something like a DJI FPV system with goggles instead of the screen it would be absolutely OK for the ride. I would like to try it.

    I think part of the problem is that it was quite open, so you're more aware of the real world going the wrong way. If it was like an SPV you would have been more enclosed and your brain would be less distracted.

      This is in the mbt 70, where the driver is inside the turret with the rest of crew, driving with a screen. Even then, the testing drivers always got motion sick.

    Great video...I wonder if wearing a VR headset and having that as the display rather than a screen would make it easier to drive because with your eyes fully enclosed and theoretically you shouldn't be as distracted by the real world.

    You could have tried driving a car in reverse gear with rear view camera. Same result. Car will be in reverse. You will be facing the wrong way and you can see where the car is going on your display. Just remember to fold your mirrors.
    You could also do another experiment. Drive only with your rear-view camera and next trip try only with rear view mirrors. You can test which is more intuitive.
    I tried this last week. I found it was more intuitive to drive with rear view mirrors.

      Mhm when you use both rear view mirror or rear view camera, both have a mirrored image; but your steering controls are corresponding. I don't think the physicality of that matches what they're testing, so they have a camera which transmits unmirrored, as-photographed; and they have drive-by-wire steering which reverses the control direction, so when you see a left turn, you turn left, but the vehicle under you feels like it's turning right.
      Then again i don't think the show considered this all too deeply, fundamentally if such a vehicle had to be built, both sorts of view/control would be tested and the more suitable one chosen.
      BTW, the rear view camera modules usually have a resistor or a jumper link inside them that configures them between mirrored and unmirrored, because the underlying sensor and circuit board has different uses besides car reversing camera, the same would be used for security cameras, drone FPV, industrial control automation, etc. Unfortunately they're usually potted so changing configuration involves some destruction. Anyway if you wanted your rear view camera to be extra confusing, it can be done like that. If the camera has a built-in line overlay (rather than added on by the headunit), this is turned on and off in the same way.

    I can't help but wonder if the reason it was so difficult for you to focus, is if it was because you could still see the outside world in your peripheral vision, rather than being fully enclosed in the vehicle like in the TV show? Would have been easier if they had also built you in an enclosure so you couldn't see outside the vehicle?

      @MrMonotone Yes, very true, but a more massive vehicle won't be pulling tight turns at high speed.
      I would compare it to riding in a jumbo jet: you don't feel the speed, and most maneuvers are done so gently that you hardly feel them, either.

      Also, it's a very small vehicle that really lets you "feel" the motion. I wonder if it would be easier in something massive where you don't feel it rock and move as much.

      @TheShinyShow That's actually exactly like driving in a racing sim with a VR headset. Every VR sim racer has experienced the dizziness from your eyes telling you that you're moving while your body is telling you that you're not, but that can easily be overcome by simply practicing so your brain gets used to it.

      I was thinking about that too. However, sensing accelleration and motion alone will probably also throw you off. Still, I think you will get used to it similarly to the turning room/artificial gravity lab and the bike that turns into the wrong direction.

    What I think would be interesting to see is rear wheel steering only vehicle. The setup they have close, just remove the screen and just drive it the way you’re facing now. Kind of like a forklift but a little faster I suppose. Would it feel disorientating with the rear wheels turning the and moving rear end out the other way to the turn

    Always glad to see someone else who grew up watching Gerry Anderson shows. To give you a little background, Gerry wanted to put in the rear facing thing based on the studies at the time of it being safer and less likely for people to get injured in a crash. He later hated it because it meant he had to throw in a line every few episodes to explain it. Which is why you get characters in an SPV crash saying "I'm fine! The rear-facing seat saved me!"

      great thing about this video besides the interesting concept is that hopefully it will intrigue people about Gerry Anderson shows and its weird, fascinating and batshit insane concepts. Love Anderson's shows like Terrahawks, Thunderbirds, Stingray and UFO, they're fantastic sci-fi shows, really underrated and not talked about as much. I think some of his ideas definitely definitely stand amongst other sci-fi shows like Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek.

    This is very cool. Although I think the open sided nature of the buggy probably didn't help. The SPV did have those tiny windows in the doors but that was it, and they were out of sight of the driver, so they had nothing else to focus on other than the screen.

    Ha excellent, I too have always harboured that question! (and always marvelled at the scene changes. I think Emmerdale should do that). I wonder if it would have been easier if the vehicle had sides, so you couldn't see the real world, even in your periphery?

    The thing is, with the show you actually can’t see the outsides around you and your just focusing on the screen. With here you can see everywhere so that must of tricked the brain big time.

    honestly, the vr headset would probably reduce the "everything other than the screen going backwards" simptoms, you'd still feel the acceleration but, if the latency being such a problem, it would end up like a hybrid with that delayed car video you did with william osman and michael reeves

      @Haph its an issue of focal point versus convergence point and there is nothing that can be done about that. Proven by simulator studies performed by the USAF ~25% of the population has issues upto 24hrs afterward, nevermind the nausea in 30 mins or less.

      @Lucas Gondra To be honest, VR nausea is a factor of how good your latency is (in reaction to head movements), and even more importantly how much experience you have with vr. Just getting used to it can help a lot, I’ve heard.
      Though, to be fair, when you are in a moving vehicle, it adds the factor of accelerations you wouldn’t have otherwise, so it’s probably more nauseating.

      Also in this particular configuration it looks VERY similar to being in a normal car looking through the rear view mirror when reversing. I reckon that's where the "my brain turned right when I meant to turn left" bit came from, but you could definitely unlearn that behaviour. In the same way you can learn to ride a bike normally when the handlebars move the opposite way.

    It actually took me a long time to figure out that in Captain Scarlet they drove those SPVs backwards. As a kid, I always thought it funny that they were driving facing a TV screen instead of a window.

    For the camera, you could use an FPV camera system like those used in FPV racing drones. Very low latency and high picture quality if using one of the digital variants (like DJI or newly announced Walksnail/Fatshark components). Simple to set up and implement, and can utilize the "VR" style goggles or a screen. Cheers!

    When I was 14 I went to the UK for a month and rode a bike for most of the time I was getting around. It took me something like 2 weeks to get used to driving on the left side. And what's even more interesting it took also almost the same amount of time to get used to the right side when I was back home.

      @Windroid_User we did this in school. They were simple plastic prisms taped to a glasses frame. You can build them for a few tens of Euro's. And probably buy them on Amazon or Ali.

      @Windroid_User the most famous is likely the innsbruck experiments i the 1880s i think it was, it takes about 48 hours to start to adjust and a few of weeks to fully adjust. Then again when you remove them.

    I had a dream that I had to drive backwards really fast while looking in the rearview mirror. In the dream I discovered that the going backwards and mirroring result in not needing to adjust. Left turns left, right turns right. It's so natural now.

    Would this have been safer if the engineers merely transposed the controls so they worked the way your brain worked? It seems the major issue is you are fighting your natural instincts in controlling direction and motion.

    Honestly, I feel that if a person drove this way all the time, even the "backwards" sensory perception would soon feel perfectly normal. Just like how a standard driver now has no problem looking in their rearview mirror and comprehending how the "backwards" view applies to their vehicle and surroundings. Really, it's just what you're used to!

    1:50 As long as it has more than 8 cubic meters of air in it, it will actually float. That's why submarienes need to be terribly heavy. Doesn't look that big though ( :
    Maybe the premise of the show was: try to spot all the dumb bits.
    On the other hand, that car won't be stolen any time soon.
    The original car was closed. Not seeing reality around the monitor might make a difference.
    Next challenge: sideways, upside down...
