Will YouTube Ever Run Out Of Video IDs?

  • In the URL of each BRclip video is the 11-character video ID, unique for each video. Can they ever run out? Just how many videos can BRclip handle? To work it out, we need to talk about counting systems, and about something called Base 64.

It's not actually 64^11. I can virtually guarantee that they're taking a 64 bit number, and base64 encoding it. That requires 11 characters; but 64^11 is about 4 times larger than 2^64.

64^11? No, lmao. Also, they don't really have to check for dictionary words with such a huge space, altho they might have to start checking for duplicates soon when the number of videos starts going into the billions. But a collision with a real word is so unlikely that it will never happen (unless we're talking like "cat" + random garbage). It's very difficult to comprehend how large of a number 64^11 is.
PS: 64^11 = 2^66. The number of **atoms** in the observable universe is estimated to be 2^80. Two-three more characters and there would be more possible videos than there are atoms that will ever be accessible from Earth.

That last part really hit me. The fact that even if we do run out of URLs all they have to do is add one more character and that would be enough to do 64 times the amount of time it would take to fill the last amount of videos

The issue is that then you have a similar scenario as with IPv4 addresses. We ran out of them and thus we had to adopt IPv6 to increase the number of possible IP addresses.
Although, not completely the same since now we need both IPv4 and new IPv6 to identify a network device...(2 strings instead of 1 which is still possible if we increase by 1 character)

2:19 when they generate a random number and check if its already been taken, is there not a chance (although infinitely small) that 2 servers could pick the same number at the same time and create a duplicate? Does that possibly not need to be checked for because it is so unlikely

    • Steven
      Steven 20 dias atrás

@Floorgle No, not usually. It is a waste of processing/lookup power especially on the scale of websites like BRclip with the sheer number of servers/videos/requests per second. If you get to the point of two clashes happening, there are bigger things to worry about.
BRclip's use of base 64 and 11 characters is actually quite unique for ease of use/sharing. Most companies and programmers are told to use what is called a universally unique identifier (UUID) instead. It is a standard and looks like 123e4567-e89b-12d3-a456-426614174000 (if you use any Microsoft product online, you will see them used everywhere in URL's). The reason for this you can generate 1 billion UUIDs per second for about 85 years, and only have a 50% chance of two of all those UUID's clashing, so nearly impossible. It is considered so small, it is ignored and not checked.

    • Floorgle
      Floorgle Mês atrás

@Shlok Sinha while I completely understand the sheer absurdity of that happening, i was just wondering if it was accounted for- as even with it being such a small chance it is still *technically* possible, also as more and more urls are “used up” the total pool becomes smaller and so as it gets closer to the limit it gets more likely- even though that is a very small chance still, i just wonder if they have something in place to stop that

    • Shlok Sinha
      Shlok Sinha Mês atrás

I think you are underestimating the number of urls. Just for fun you and someone else can say any random number between 1 to 1000 and not repeat a number. I can almost assure you that you will not get the same number even once. Now, 73 quintillion is a quadrillion times bigger than 1000. Odds of that happening is very little. In my opinion two servers have never even assigned the same url ever much less assign them together.

I will point out that the system does become un-useable before all Ids are used (admittedly you'd still need to use most of the IDs before it becomes a problem and thats not likely to happen); if Ids are randomly generated and then checked for a conflict then using the last Id would involve a lot of "generate random id,.... nope in use ,... generate a new one ,.. nope,... another,... nope" (ie the chance of generating the one ID not in use is 1/id-range)

Just in case you ever thought about trying to put in a random 11 character URL to see what video you got, think again. With over 73 Quintillion possible combinations, and anywhere between 5 and 10 billion videos on BRclip currently, this means that on average you could expect to find a random video attached to the random URL you came up with ONCE every 73 MILLION attempts (and that is if there are 10 billion videos on youtube, the generous side of the range).

      Hello
      I use a translator.
There is a good way to find out how many videos youtube have.
It is a way to use youtube videoID.
BRclip has 11 characters in the id.
And that character has 6bit per character and the last character has 4bit.
(The last character has only 16 types) [048AEIMQUYcgkosw]
In total, id has 64bit. (6*10+4)
      Of that, fix 32 bits.
      For example: abcde1234a0
      →abcde*****0
      →abcde*****4
      →abcde*****8
      →abcde*****w
Try all of these patterns. (Approximately 4.2 billion times)
And if you put 2^32 on the hit video, you can see all the videos on youtube

@GibbonBasher alright. You said by doing that you want to "make it look cleaner". As for me, clean code represents well-structured and easy to understand one. That's why I mentioned readabilty. But it seems we talk about different thing when we use "make code cleaner" expression.

Sure people may claim that Tom used cue cards to do this in one take. But let me ask you, is that the story you want to tell your children and their children for generations to come? Or do you want to tell them a story that fills the future of humanity with hope and awe; the story of Tom Scott who once against all odds recorded a video with huge numeric details all in one take.

    • Greenway Janus 2
Greenway Janus 2 11 dias atrás

But if he did use cue cards (which I don't think so, purely hypothetical scenario here) would lying be the story you want to tell your children? Tell them this great story while failing to mention the elephant in the room? Yes? No?
