I Can't Show You How Pink This Pink Is

  • Publicado em 17 Jul 2017
  • I can show a brighter pink. I can show a more saturated pink. But I can't show you this pink. Not quite. More about Stuart Semple and his pigments: www.culturehustle.com/ [that's his store, we overloaded Stuart's personal web site, www.stuartsemple.com , within a few minutes...!]
(I reached out to Anish Kapoor's studio twice for comment; I didn't get any response.)

Colour grading this video was a nightmare! I've got as close as I can to the real colour - Stuart gave me a small pot of the pigment to take home! - but it's just not quite there. It's not more saturated, it's not brighter, it's just... a tiny bit more pink, somehow.

This has been a huge source of hilarious drama in the art community.
After Anish Kapoor stuck his middle finger in pink as pink, Stewart Semple produced a pigment shown in the video, diamond dust. This pigment is made out of super finely crushed glass... meaning, Anish cannot stick his middle finger in it without being in a considerable amount of pain.

I mean, only if the ash is specifically made of silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, and sodium carbonate, since those are the minerals glass is primarily made of.
Edit: Just adding clarification that volcanic ash is not made of the same mineral composition that every day glass is so no one gets that idea in their head.
It may have the similar properties, but it still isn't quite glass as the mineral composition is different.

I just got this pigment. It REALLY is hard to explain how pink it is. On its own, it just POPS. Like, I have ALL sorts of fluorescent colors, and the most fluorescent pink I owned before this now looks magenta next to it.
But under a blacklight, this pigment literally looks glitch-in-the-matrix level of pink.

I took photos of a Scarlet tanager about a year ago - in full sunlight, it looked like it had been plugged into an outlet and turned on. I thought I'd have some terrific pictures to show off.
The photos were terrible: much of the red was completely blown out, replaced with a yellowish orange color as the camera's computer (an expensive Nikon) lost its mind trying to process what it was seeing. I think the feathers must absorb extra light at other wavelengths and convert it to red, on top of the red that's already there.

The best photo I've ever seen came off a film camera back in the mid 90s. It was taken down the main street here in Dunedin, New Zealand by my late grandmother. It was of a protest march being led by a police car with it's light bar and headlights lit up.
To this day, the photo (which I have not seen for some 20 years) still sticks in my mind as the best colour reproduction and clarity I have ever seen anywhere. The depth and precise colours were amazing, along with absolutely no washing or misrepresentation of actual colours.

Because what Tom failed to explain is that it's a UV activated paint. It's not that the hue can't be displayed on contemporary screens, it's its intensity. With high dynamic range and 10 or 12 bit colour capture and display, you possibly could. But most displays are 8 bit per colour and standard dynamic range.

@Jay Tee Correct. The pink is probably a mixture of a monochromatic red of about 640 nm plus pure white. Pinks containing small amounts of other colours will look a little less vibrant. It would be interesting to know what the pigment is.

I'm wondering whether you could show how pink the pink is by photographing it with a camera with a low-contrast filter over the lens. Maybe that would reduce the contrast of everything else in the shot, but the pink might be so pink that it would stay the same in the recorded image. So you'd get to see how much pinker it is than other things around it - ideally you'd have some other things in the shot with known pink colours for reference.

There's a tradeoff between saturation (presumably this is the "pinkness" that the pinkest pink has the most of) and luminance. I wonder where this pigment falls. Not to mention hue.
The pinkest pink light source would be a combination of two monochromatic light sources: the reddest red and the bluest blue. But those are not well-defined: you can always go redder; the result will just get darker and darker until it's too dark to see.
"Pink" specifically is an interesting color because it's defined not just by hue and saturation but by luminance too; you can't have a dark pink because that's just purple or red. So I guess there's a minimum brightness that qualifies as "pink", and surely the pinkest pink would have that brightness.

@Anonymous Because to represent those colors, you need more bits in the individual RGB values, as it's not like you can magically represent a higher value with the same amount of bits. More bits means that the maximum number that those bits can represent increases.

@BlueFire Animations Then why would brighter colours (e.g. brighter reds) increase the colour range?

    • BlueFire Animations

@Anonymous That doesn't increase the color range, only make it visually brighter.

(Flat black is the lowest-profile colour scheme, orders of magnitude lower than camo, however macho that may be. Vanta is so flat that stuff painted with it becomes essentially invisible.)

TheArQu that’s kinda what I meant? It’s a language thing to refer the space between purple and red as pink or magenta as I mentioned before. Is like calling cyan the space between blue and green. What I just meant is that most people think of pink as desaturated red (red mixed with white) when in reality is that “missing space” you mentioned between purple/violent and red

    • anonUK

Pink isn't always light red. Some pinks are light purple or various garish shades of magenta or even shocking pink.

@⸘ English has a good number of "reds": Violet, Crimson, Red, Magenta, Fuschia, Pink, and many more, and same with blues. There are too many artists across every culture to not have a far wider variety for colour names than only a couple or even a handful per major colour group, just what becomes popular in certain areas, depends on availability on time, effort, danger, and location of the materials to make them.
Back in the "good ol' days" before anyone alive today, we probably would've actually invented a word for it as a badge of pride... Or today, if a major corporation wanted to market it and spend a few million in ridiculous branding surveys.
Or, you know, just call it the "colourest colour" and be done with it! At least it's not "Pinky McPinkface" hahah

i know why some shades of pink cannot be displayed: display manufacturers don't want you to see certain shades of pink because of a government operative to restrict certain colors from being displayed on screens.
