This Video Is 2D And 3D Simultaneously: the Pulfrich Effect

  • Publicado em 25 Dez 2017
  • Hold on tight, because with a stabilised camera shot and a pair of sunglasses, you're about to see a video that works in both 2D and 3D at the same time. The technique's called the Pulfrich Effect, and this is how it works.
The BBC's terrible 90s Doctor Who special, Dimensions in Time, can be seen here, complete with its Noel Edmonds-filled framing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQCeM...

@Joe Powney Ouch indeed. I'm lucky that I went blind in one eye a couple months after being born, so I don't have any pain associated with it (other than when an eyelash gets behind my eye prosthesis and irritates it)

There was an animated series in the 70s which used this effect and a breakfast cereal company was giving away glasses to watch it.

@EVPointMaster That is true of literally every image on a 2d display, but nonetheless, the Pulfricht effect can convince your brain to percieve things as being different distances away from you

    • Leongon draws stuff

This guy is lying for some weird reason. You people give it a try, play a side scroller for a minute, then hang sunglasses on your face in a way that only one eye is shaded from the screen and play some more... It'll trick your brain into perceiving the parallax with actual depth.

  • A cat who is extremely annoyed

Things like this are so weird to me because I have a condition where I mainly see through one eye at a time with the other eye filling in the other fourth of my vision. I still can see depth and tell how far or close things are but I don't have "depth perception" as you might know it. Because of this most videos seem just as 3d to me as the real world is.

@Darth Vader bruh my friend wanted me to record me saying his script, and after several minutes of reading it (was like 150-200 word) i came to the conclusion that i have to record it in a longer mp3 and cut it down. Imo its easier said than done to speak about something for 3+ minutes without stuttering or saying something incorrectly 🤷‍♂️

This effect also happens in people with demyelinating optic nerve damage. Because myelination acts as an insulator, the neuroelectric signals in the eye with damage move slower than the other eye, and people will get a 3D effect on objects that are only moving left and right.

This looks more 3d than most 2d video even without glasses but its obvious the brain is compensating for lack of 3d. Since I started using VR my mind has started doing that more frequently where 2D will actually appear more 3D obviously without motion shift but still a very cool phenomenon and it is more noticeable on glass screens as opposed to ones with like a plastic coating or cover or whatever it is.
Side note Im getting more and more and more impressed by his ability to do one take.

The superbowl halftime show in 1989 used this technique. I was a teenager and super intrigued when we got the glasses (I think they were distributed with newspapers and magazines?) because it was just one shaded lens and one seemingly clear one. I was familiar with the red-blue and polarized variety, and even Vectrex and Sega Master System 3D glasses but could not figure out how these worked. I tried looking through them at the TV and at various light sources, and I went crazy trying to imagine what sorcery could render live 3D in full color on a regular TV.
I realized less than 30 seconds into the show that it was a gimmick that only worked on rotating images, said something like "oh this is BS," and went back to playing video games.

What's amazing for me is this video was made in just one single take😂

Didn’t have sunglasses anywhere near me at the moment, but making a tiny hole with the right hand and watching the video through that pinhole gave me a glimpse of what he is talking about. Believe me. It works.

@Blob of Blu Tack I can see we are both nerds. :) I would have tried to figure this one out also. Which reference point did you use to count one rotation, cos all the trees look the same?

      @ 2:11 they complete their 7th rotation, 2m 11s is 2.18 minutes, 7 rotations / 2.18 minutes = 3.211 RPM

This would be cool if I could see in 3D 😂 my eyes don’t work together properly so 3D glasses and such do nothing for me

I love how this is possible for me even though I have to wear glasses, because my glasses have magnetice sunglasses.

This seems to work if you squint your right eye enough to just see through your eye lashes, on my phone. Powerful effect 🤯

For those of you who don’t have sunglasses right next to you, you get the same effect if you squint one of your eyes a lot while keeping the other open

This was the perfect video to get recommended to me as I’m sitting beside my broken sunglasses and can hold the lens that popped out against my eye instead of the whole pair or glasses

I feel that effect sometimes if an object is obstructing my vision and completely blocking one eye while watching a video with a uniform background, seems like the subject in the middle pops out from the background

This video was recommended to me today, and I didn't know my sunglasses, which allow me to remove the lenses separately (though I don't think that that's by design), would be so handy

Dude whoa! It actually works. Trust me, if you're lying in bed go ahead a look for a pair of sunglasses (or some dark filter to put on your right eye), you won't be disappointing. You may have to play with your screen brightness in order to get the max effect.

I initially watched this normally since I didn't have a pair of sunglasses lying around, but when it came up in my recommended again today, I decided to give it a shot. If I'm being perfectly honest, I didn't expect it to actually work. But wow, it really does!

A quick change of perspective creates 3D. Simplest way to create 3D videos.

There’s definitely a cool effect but instead of 3D, it just feels like a pop up 2d figure in front of the moving background

Couldn’t you somehow incorporate this effect in a 360 degrees video so that it seems interactive?

Technically everything you see is 2D. Much like a painting, you only see one face or angle of everything you're looking at, meaning it can be thought of as 2D.
