There's an FAQ about this if you pull down the description, because I figure there'll be some questions about how this was all put together!

Is this a billion or a milliard? 1,000,000 - million1,000,000,000 - milliard1,000,000,000,000 - billionIf you used milliard you are not science
Call me be when you can tell
Why does it come on in my sleep? I've got this and the bread to space one's showing up every night I leave BRclip on. WHY!?
Taxi drivers calculating their price be like...
@kyle robinson ,
Too much idle sitting has ruined my body
Who still uses taxi nowadays? Uber now
Most generous taxi driver I’ve ever seen then
This really puts into perspective how faster driving a car is than walking
For me it did the opposite. You think, "he walked that in a minute, it'll be over in the blink of an eye". But actually, even highway/motorway driving is only 20-30 times walking speed. They're closer than you might instinctively think.Apart from "driving is closer to walking than you might think", the other lesson for me was the difference between 1 and 1,000. That's what the video addresses, more than the difference between a million and a billion.
@red 2 the electric boogaloo The US only has slightly less land than the entirety of Europe; the US will have to worry about that around the time that every European county also runs out of land
@eggrollsoup I've changed my mind on this since then bro, I love public transportation now
@Sub if you're against Communism Size of land is not an excuse to build low density car dependent suburbia. It’s terribly inefficient, costly, leads to pollution, and people are unable to use other forms of transportation so they must depend on cars. Do you really like sitting in traffic all day?
@eggrollsoup no argument
I think the best way I've ever heard the distinction summed up is:"What's the difference between a million and a billion? About a billion."Because it's fully true. The difference between a million and a billion is 0.999 billion, which feels so close to 1 that the difference might as well not be there at all. Compared to a billion, a million is practically nothing.
@kj Ford It's a tricky one since it depends on the country you live in. In Sweden, for example, a billion is a million millions. Apparently it was the same in the UK but they changed in the 70:s. What you describe would be called a milliard.You'd think countries could have decided to use the same standard for something as fundamental as numbers, but then again we still have imperial vs metric.
@Joe Shmoe one million is a thousandth of one billion
@Call me Shaggy In many sciences it would not only be accepted, but even praised. If you get a result with p = 0.001 in a social study then you are a very very happy person.
@Joe Shmoe Um it's 0.999 which is 99.9%
That's a thousandth though, not a billionth. There is a massive difference between one-thousand, and one-billion.
"How long did you walk""About the average American Healthcare debt"
This is the perfect representation of the disparity of wealth. I could live VERY comfortably for 10-20 years off of a million or 2. The difference between that and a billion is inconceivable almost.
@Ted Kaczynski, American Hero oh no the libertarians are here
@Ted Kaczynski, American Hero I bet you vote for big military spenders.
@Ted Kaczynski, American Hero If they didn't the accumulators would have all the money. And quickly there would not be much of it.
@Ted Kaczynski, American Hero ok schizo, please keep assuming everything about me
@Owen The US government sends and spend hundreds of billions of dollars on outside interests for and with other countries. Keep voting for the same people though, maybe one day you'll figure it out.
"How fast are we driving right now?" "About a billion dollars an hour."
"about a trillion dollors/5 days
Yes, that's how we'll calculate gas prices if they keep rising fml...
Wait the petrol prices increased again?
Actual prices of gas in the near future
What a funny and interesting video, It certainly doesn't make you question the amount of power which only very few people on the planet have that unfathomably more people desperatly need
@Gebriel T you've got a billion dollars?
@Gebriel T Most people that rich were born into it or got extremely lucky. Nothing to do with "programming".
Them and us are made from the same material with the same capability The only difference is we were programed different
Anybody who believes that a billion dollars is a reasonable amount for a human being to possess should have to sit through this.
Or, quit cockwatching and realize its their money and not anyones right to determine how much someone should own.
They should watch the process of earning a billion pounds (or dollars) at a rate of £1 (or $1) per second. That's £300 (or $300...) in 5 minutes.It'd take more than 3 *decades.*
At .25x speed.
This is a literal work of art - it manages to be simultaneously both very boring and very interesting at the same time…nothing else manages to capture both ends of the spectrum quite so eloquently!!!
This video is dated by the petrol station on the entrance into margate (1:09:52) when the petrol was only £1.14 a litre. As of today (01/07/22) that petrol station now charges £1.94 per litre! Very fun video. I live fairly close to the start point and make that same journey quite regularly, so it was interesting seeing Tom doing it.
So the difference between a million and a billion is, roughly, a billion.
That's one of the best ways to explain it, imo. When dealing with orders of magnitude, the brain tends to just fart and think it's not that significant, but if you think of it in terms of subtraction, the difference is suddenly obvious
Wow.. I never knew.
Well it's technically a thousand , igeuss
This video went on autoplay while I was sick and I’m so glad it did. Not only was it something relaxing to sleep to, but listening to the length of 1 billion dollars put a new perspective of how much money it really is.
I never imagined how uncomfortable it would be to drive on the opposite side to the one we are used to, I was surprised at how uncomfortable I felt throughout the video despite enjoying the content.
I love how the GPS immediately just shows you that getting a billion dollars is impossible, since you need to go both east and west at the same time to reach it :D
He reached more money than me or my family has ever had in our lives in about a second of walking
Ah yes, a video where we can silently judge Tom's driving ability.
@Awesome Ninja actually, automatic, manual, and all other transmission types reach close to even thirds in the global market share.
@Potato Hunter "most cars are automatic" maybe like 10% at most???
@Echantediamond 1 nah, if you have the option between fun and less fun, you generally choose fun. In this case I prefer an auto, but thats simply because I'm a bad manual driver :p
@Jacko Driving is a tool, not a hobby. If you want it to act as such, then go to a driving range.
I realize I'm commenting on a video published quite sometime ago, but I'm still going to do it. This really highlights how the human psyche has a hard time equating how vastly large numbers can truly be and this is simply the comparison of a million to billion. People loosely throw around the term a Googleplex, who's size is so unfathomable, it hasn't even been represented in the existence of the universe itself. Then there's Graham's number....it's big, really big.
Can we all just take a second to appreciate that Tom just did over an hour of uncut video of him driving in silence to Margate JUST to try and give us a different perspective on million vs billion?!?! Bravo my friend 👏 👏👏👏👏👏👏
The brain can definitely handle one dimension. Very effective way to bring home the message of inequality.
OMG ... you drove like an entire HOUR on the wrong side of the road! Glad everyone's ok!
An excellent visualisation of the insane cost of petrol in the UK.
as a german I relate
it should be 10 times more expensive, so fuckwobbles dont fry Britain with their CO2 anymore
Look at me laughing. I wish I had those prices
@Tommy C's Cat Insurance doesn't always cover everything and not everyone qualifies for Medicaid.
This is one of the more relaxing videos you’ve made. Perfect for going to sleep. Turn the volume up and the lights out and bam, awesome white noise.
I'll be honest. The reason I keep coming back is I miss driving monthly the 6 hours north to visit my sister. I loved the road trips, there were so many fun things to see between her house and mine.
There are other youtubers who drive like this through different countries.
I've always been a big anglophile, but I'm even more of one now that I know the highways have no billboards. Truly a great country!
That speed up to half a million a second really set my expectations of the time for this video low. I severely miscalculated how long 1 billion dollars is in a quiet British man’s car
Finally, my life's dream has been achieved: a long car ride with Tom Scott in awkward silence.
@Zyphru You’ve never been farther away from home than a couple of hundred million dollars?
awkward? its quite nice
@Xiph1980 sed is an invention of Satan, just like vim. You can't convince me otherwise.
Never realized the time bar on the video does a rather good job of intuitively giving humans an idea of the contrastTime is a construct respected created taught and shared by humans so it makes senseFeels like one of the most intuitive things we can use because its as subjective as our prespective on things
It's a shame that grammar isn't a construct that is respected, despite being created, taught, and shared by humans. It also helps things make sense.
Now that's some visualisation, though it would have been nice to see a map of the distance too.
Driving on the left side of the road looks like an experience to live. Like i would say its on my bucketlist tbh
One of the things this teaches me is that I am NOT ready to attempt driving in a country that drives on the left side of the road. I had a couple of moments of panic-by-proxy when you turned into what felt to me like a lane of oncoming traffic.Also, I'm amazed at just how many wind turbines are casually dotting the landscape. I never realized how big wind power was in Britain.
Can we all take a minute to appreciate that Tom didn't insult anyone on the road for a whole 1h trip ?
Not very British of him, I must say.
@Ivo Trausch Oh, huh. I can only see it once now too. Huh.
@Rec8 I only see it once
@Ivo Trausch You posted your reply twice btw
@Corpie Or if you aren't italian, that is
My favorite interpretation of 1 million vs 1 billion is that 1 million seconds is roughly 11 days and 1 billion seconds is more than 31 years.
11:05 I like how the shutter speed lines up with the rotation of the tires on the car on the left for a moment
that's not shutter that's framerate
I was sceptical about the difference between walking in the car park compared to the car journey, until I did a quick number crunch. Mind blown!!!
the one thing that made me realize just how insane a billion is, was this comparison "1 million seconds is 11 days, 1 billion seconds is 32 YEARS"
And 1 trillion is 32 milleniums
Fun fact: Jeff Bezos made around 6 million dollars while we watched this video.
@Jon Harley When the other option is starvation and poverty, it's not a choice at all.
@Bruno Ferreira Who do the workers work for? Who’s company do they work for? Who agreed to work for that much money? They did. Workers need to take responsibility for their choice.
@Jon Harley The workers earned it, not him.
@Bruno Ferreira It is not immoral for someone to be as wealthy as bezos and them are. It is actually immoral for you to try and force people to do what you want with their money, that they earned.
@fabio Okay and? they earned that money by building their companies
I weirdly keep coming back to this, it's one of the only recordings of most of my daily commute to work, yet it has this many views from all over the world. It's just weird to think about.And I don't find this relaxing, it makes me a bit uncomfortable watching at the weekend, making my brain think I'm going to work.
I am always impressed by your dedication to making great videos. I personally would draw the line long before voluntarily going to Margate
This video is incredible! Simply mind-blowing. I couldn't believe my eyes as I was watching, yet the facts can't be disputed!It's possible to have a sunny day with clear, blue skies in England!
Actually, I'm shocked!Recently I've just installed a 1tb sdcard in my phone. According to my calculations, if this were to be equivalent to the paper pages of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, it would occupy shelf-space of more than 2 miles long!
The best visualisation of a truly staggering amount of money to date.Fantastic video as always Mr Scott, albeit a missed opportunity to title the video: "The Billion Dollar Road to Margate." 😆
The world needs a Chris Broad and Tom Scott collaboration.
Ay it's the Japan guy
So many anime pfps..
uhhhhhhhhhh unexpected encounter
I really like long haul driving videos. They have some where a driver goes live for seven hours or more going across the USA. (Yes it’s that big. You can drive for a week and not find the coast from the other coast).
Whilst it is seemingly mildly discomforting of the bleak no-small-talk/fill trip, is a precisely this, that captures the [real] difference. Well done.
me while Tom is talking at the start: ok so how long a vid have i roped myself into? over an hour? sure why not? ill watch while reading. also me 20 mins in: it must be nearly there now right? its been ages! maybe its close? ...nopestill gonna watch til the end though!also can i say im impressed there arent any ads scattered throughout this vid?
A mirrored version of the video would be cool so I didn't have to freak out the whole time you were driving on the wrong side of the road. But overall good video 👍
Recording this must have felt like taking a driving test.
@legendaryhusky 1 not so fun fact: if you had been hit by that truck in germany, you would have failed that driving test through no fault of your own. Why? Because F U, that's how they operate
@RedPie theythem fair enough
@Mikael Jensen just because they missed the truck doesn't mean they're safe.
@legendaryhusky 1 Fun story 2: I was almost it by a trash truck doing a 4 point U turn at a 4 way intersection where only one way had to stop. The driving test lady actually told me to stomp on the gas to get away from the guy, still passed the test of course.
BRclipr: drives properly and safely Bracken Dawson: you did that on purpose for your video, you’re not a good driver.
I did this once but with time, I explained that if you converted 100 billion dollars to seconds; you'd have 3168 years, and if you'd then spend 10 million dollars, you'd only have lost 16 weeks...
well compared to walking, the care increase you speed by about x20, from 5km/h to 100km/h (lets say) so if you need to go 1000 times so distance its 1000/20 which makes it 50 times longer so, the 1 and a half minutes turned into about a one and a half hour in the video (since the value i used aren't exact and your speed wasn't constant obviously)
Besides being a great visualization of a billion dollars... this is a great demo of how to drive. Canadians and Americans take note.
More people should watch this just to comprehend the atrocity that billionaires are allowed to exist while there are people who literally cannot afford food or other basic needs.
Much respect that Tom was dedicated enough to the one-shot that this was the third take. $2 Billion worth of footage wasted
@Emily Wilson but the return was not filmed, so it is worthless. :-)
$2 billion worth of footage *invested
@Fortnite kinda Sucks Lmao He'd have to drive back in between takes meaning that's $4 billion worth wasted minimum
@Emily Wilson Maybe this was his drive home
don't forget to count the drive back
I looked at the length of the video and it seemed much too long. Then I did a rough calculation in my head and ballparked an hour and a half driving. (lots of rounding). Thanks for this video, it definitely helped adjust my mental map of some things.
You know as much as we all appreciate your content, more than 99% of your viewers, me included, are strangers.
It's strange how UK roads look so much like Arizona roads to me. Driving on the 202 or I-60 through Phoenix feels very similar to this for me.
Would be nice to know the Meter/Km value of each amount.
I found this quite therapeutic and it helped me drift off to sleep. Unfortunately I was supposed to be working at the time.
@ham stirrer 😶
That's why you aren't rich. Kids these days.
APPARENTLY YOU DONT HAVE SUBWOOFERS.
@ham stirrer oof
I sometimes think about how it would take 10 years of saving £100,000 a year to get 1 million, but 10,000 years to get to a billion. Crazy.And over a million years to get to Jeff bezos' net worth 😂
It's also crazy to think that the vast majority of wealth is stored and will never really be used while more than half the people on earth live on less than $5 per day.
I drifted off to sleep listening to this and was very confused to when I was abruptly woken up by a Mr Tom Scott exclaiming $10,000!
This video always comes on when I fall asleep watching BRclip. Like I fall asleep, it plays one more video related to what I was watching, and than, BAM, Tom driving for an hour, or the unedited garlic bread flight, or Michael saying prime numbers for 3 hours. It does not matter what I fall asleep watching, one of those videos will always play after I fall asleep.
In 12 million US Dollars turn right.
@MrJohnisthename Fair, Fair
@Ryan_John_Wilkins It's spelled "You", not "Ya,"
Ya forgot the comma! Correct sentence: ‘In 12 million US Dollars, turn right.”
Gas prices be like
gas prices moment
Tom, I feel like you won BRclip. The Algorithm is so convinced I want to watch this video that its the default video whenever I stop paying attention and it has been this way since you made it.
So, what was the total distance you drove from your starting point?
Great vídeo!A way I show this difference to me students is comparing 1 million seconds (11,57 days) to one billion seconds (31,7 years)
I didn't realize the UK had this kind of car-dependent urban sprawl. Aside from some superficial differences its almost indistinguishable from the US.
A million seconds is about 11 days and a billion seconds is about 31 years. Thankfully, Tom's video isn't that long!
@13E666L13 no, a million seconds is 11.5 DAYS. 1,000,000 ÷ 60 = about 16,667 minutes16,667 minutes ÷ 60 = about 278 hours278 hours ÷ 24 = about 11.5 days
When I worked in a museum, that's how I explained it to people. I'd generally ask how long they thought a million second was then ask how long a billion seconds was. The eyes turning the size of dinner plates was always fun.
@N That's not how it is
1 trillion seconds is about 31,709 years
@Isko Maxmin That would be around 31000 years, 1000 X 31 years, which is a billion seconds.
It is such a trip seeing places I know get drove past on a video viewed by millions.
Props to you tom for driving for an hour just for a vid
Yank here. I often use weight comparison to help my countrymen properly visualize the utter absurdity of Billionaire tax-amnesty: A million usd is a 23lb briefcase of hundreds, and a billion is a maxed out rental lorry. *10tons* of hundreds.
How did Tom calculate the speed of clock based on his current speed?
Alternate Title: _"You misbehaved at the shop and now your disapproving father is driving you home in awkward silence" ASMR_
@MadiTheTroll1337 u play fps games?
@coows yo im not the only one? Thank god
This is so perfect
@coows Until it did.
@JustAnthony Iterum didn't age well literally everywhere in america. I said this without meaning it, as none of this happened.
I wish drivers in the US were as corteous about keeping right when not overtaking. Drives me absolutely bonkers.
It would be cool for a follow up video now that we have multiple hundred billionaires (Elon Musk, Jeff Bezo, etc).And then Amazon and Apple became Trillion dollar companies.But that would require a plane or rocket to film.....which would be cool! (You can't have a more fitting visualization than using a SpaceX rocket launch for Elon's wealth, then compare it to Amazon/Apple market cap)
You cat tell that he broke the speed limit by how fast the money was going up!!
I always tell people if they wanna feel the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire then just remember that 1,000,000 seconds is roughly 11 and a 1/2 days while 1,000,000,000 seconds is about 37.1 years...
Imagine this was a taxi.Tom: makes one wrong turnThis little manoeuvre is going to cost us $230,000
@Nash Aguirre my phone Gave me the option to translate it into English.
@Robert Li We do love stealing French words.
Ever Given: Hold my rudder...
@Robert Li manœuvre you mean ?
In part this feels like a nice “POV passenger’s seat w/ Tom Scott through UK roads” video.
Thing that made trillion stun me:Figure out how long it will take to count to one trillion at one second per number - almost 32,000 years.
I used to service a place where they push around a million or 3, in $100 bills on utility carts!Blew my mind!
Linear > volume as you sir have demonstrated in comparing money. Great video!
It was all just an excuse so Tom could go to the beach and write it off as a business expense
@Flanix Unlucky In the sims 2 at least.
@áfghâń łîøñ Can confirm, money does grow on trees :)
@ApertureChromaKey where do you think tom gets his money from
*Laughs in Gus Johnson's Keytar*
Watching a car go "on the wrong side" in pov can make the traffic look really confusing.
I like to imagine that behind the camera, Tom is actually super giddy just thinking about going to the beach
This has become my favorite video to put on at night. Just the vibe and white noise, it's great :3
Always Love these level of precision in your videos
it's MY sleepover and I get to choose the movie.
I almost fell alseep to it
@Aniruddha Chatterjee Seriously inspirational too. Almost cried halfway through
@Fluffyth3f0x It's not predictable if you have a short attention span. I forgot what I was watching roughly 5 times during the video, so when I saw the money counter going up in the top right corner, I called my boss and told him I quit.Edit: I am now in debt. I blew all my money on cocaine and hookers, thinking I owned the $1B.
Lo chistoso es que para muchos países latinos, la diferencia es mucho mayor, ya que usamos el sistema largo para hablar de millón, mil millones y un billón, en este caso, el video muestra lo que se demora recorrer mil millones de dolares
That little hiccup at the beginning of the driving portionreally nails internet fact that no matter how intelligent the body, they're prone to the most basic of human mistakes. Lefts and rights.
Consider this, in the video, a billion dollars covers about 68 miles. Yet, that is still 10x CHEAPER than the costs of California's high-speed rail project.Dollar bills stacked the same way, from LA to NY, would still not add-up to the fortunes of Bill Gates, or Jeff Bezos, or Elon Musk, etc...Is your mind blown now?
Always interesting to see near your home area in a BRclip video, especially when it’s by someone you watch
I've heard an interesting comparison of those values on an example of time. One million seconds is over 11 days and one billion seconds is about 32 years xD
Well in that case I'm two billion seconds old ....Pete from Australia
And one trillion seconds is 31709.7919837646 years. hehe.
Elon Musk could send me £100 every hour for a year and not even notice. Anyone got his phone number? 😇
Roughly it takes "two weeks" to count to a million in one seconds... "32 years to count to one billion"... And "32 thousand years to count to a trillion"... Give or take only a couple of days .. it's such a huge difference in size camparison.
@The Zackast I did a similar thing for a colleague's 50th birthday. "You've been alive for...Days, hours, minutes, seconds, nanoseconds"just for a laugh. Except he didn't laugh.Fast forward to when I hit 50 and I didn't laugh either.
I trust that this is a Guinness world record for the longest distance traveled to make a point.How many dollars does your car get per mile? 😀
Instead of driving had he just kept walking with that speed, he would have taken 19 hours and 15 mins to complete $1 billion. He should have done that to show the true scale of difference between $1 Million and $1 Billion also that video would have brought him good ad sense money.
Para el Español "One Billion" en inglés se traduce a Mil Millones en Español, es decir 1.000.000.000"Un Billón" en Español serían un Millón de Millones, es decir 1.000.000.000.000Una grandísima diferencia 👍
A billion used to mean either 10^9 or 10^12 (confusingly) in the past - check out wikipedia. Depends on short scale/long scale.
@Xalex79 im guessing this is European Spanish bc I’ve never heard of this.
@Twitch ve Türkiye a trillion in English is a billion in Spanish
Dude thats trillion not billion
"Are we there yet?" "About 5 million dollars left"
Why did I expect him to speak through the entire road trip
If this gets 66k likes covid-19 will spread to greenland
@jonzka why brown sus?
who knows?maybe GPS’s voice is music to his ears and some kind of motivation to drive for an hour
@M.K. McGill i cant thumbs up cuz u hav 333 so here. 👍🏻
Lmaoo when ever I play among us or I M brown or black they choose me for some reason all the time even if i am not like what's is going on
He just reached 100 mill after 10 minutes driving, that alone puts so much into perspective, great work!But I'm not going to watch the whole movie xD
Amazing work, Tom.
This video helped me realize that we have a tough time conceptualizing the number 1000
